Title:
Fort de Malmaison
Description:
Designed by Sere de Rivieres it was completed in 1882 to guard the western end of the Chemin des Dames. However in 1884 a French chemist invented a new explosive, 10x more powerful than gunpowder, and two years later the French Army Engineers used Malmaison as a target to measure the effect of the new explosive. The extensive damage lead the French to doubt the ability of their forts to resist attack and hence encouraged them to develop the philosophy of attack at all costs.
