North of Bellenglise the St Quentin - Cambrai canal formed a formidable part of the Hindenburg Lineand the tunnel at Riqueval was used as a shelter by the Germans. The nearby Riqueval Bridge was captured on 29th Sept 1918 by the 137th Brigade - Staffords. Capt A H Charlton led a surprise attack in thick fog and managed to capture the bridge before the Germans could blow it up.
