Bois Le Pretre

A key feature in the battle for the St Mihiel salient, this wood overlooking the Moselle was fiercely contested from 1914 until captured by the Americans in Sept 1918.

St Mihiel Salient

In the bid to encircle Verdun in 1914 the Germans crossed the Meuse at St Mihiel, punching a huge salient into the French line. The two armies bitterly contested this region until the Americans recaptured it in 1918.
